The EARTHQUAKE LAKE was formed during the famous New Madrid Earthquake which shook a large section of the central United States at intervals from December 16, 1811 to February 1812. Land on either side of the Mississippi River heaved and rocked for miles and a large section on the east side of the river settled. The Mississippi River flowed backwards into the chasms forming the lake of mystery.
